Synopsis:
This seminal 1988 thriller made Bruce Willis a star and established a new template for action stories: "Terrorists take over a (blank), and a lone hero, unknown to the villains, is trapped with them." In Die Hard, those bad guys, led by the velvet-voiced Alan Rickman, assume control of a Los Angeles high-rise with Willis's visiting New York cop inside. The attraction of the film has as much to do with the sight of a barefoot mortal running around the guts of a modern office tower as it has to do with the plentiful fight sequences and the bond the hero establishes with an LA beat cop. Bonnie Bedelia plays Willis's wife, Hart Bochner is good as a brash hostage who tries negotiating his way to freedom, Alexander Godunov makes for a believable killer with lethal feet, and William Atherton is slimy as a busybody reporter. Exceptionally well directed by John McTiernan. This is probably the epitome of what an action movie ought to be. All action movies after this were modeled after Die Hard. It's true. The formula: Terrorist takes over (place), one hero is there with them who has to save the day. How many times have you seen that? Probably more than just a couple of times if you watch a lot of action movies. Not that all those movies were bad, but they can't hope to live up to the original thing. This movie had it all, great dialogue, a great script, great actors, great special effects, and the perfect combination of action with comedy. This is arguably Bruce Willis' best character ever. His banter with head terrorist Hans Gruber is at times hilarious, at times adrenaline pumping, his conversations with Sergeant Powell are inciteful and interesting, and him just talking to himself are all great parts of this film that add to the story. How many action movies are remembered so well after 15 years? A NYC detective in a skyscraper with a bunch of heavily armed terrorists and terrified hostages. The cops and tv crews fumble around outside and our everyman hero must save the day. Director John McTiernan keeps several plates simultaneously spinning as he propels the action towards the inevitable mano a mano confrontation. Bruce Willis became a superstar with this movie. Even more so than Moonlighting, Die Hard catapulted him into the top ranks of leading men. He plays his everyman cop with one liners and a humanity uncharacteristic of most action heroes. One of the best action flicks ever.

THIS IS NOT A DVD!!! THIS IS A 12" LASERDISC AND WILL NOT PLAY IN A DVD PLAYER
