Synopsis:
An illiterate cook (Robert De Niro) at a company cafeteria tries for the attention of a newly widowed woman (Jane Fonda). As they get to know one another, she discovers his inability to read. When he is fired, she takes on trying to teach him to read in her kitchen each night.
I'm one of Robert De Niro's biggest fans, and this underrated gem gives you a rare chance to see him in a role where he's not hitting someone with a baseball bat or shooting everyone in sight! Credit for this excellent film should not only go to the great cast and director, but also to Harriet Frank, Jr. and Irving Ravetch, who wrote the awesome screenplay.
Jane Fonda plays Iris King, a depressed woman whose husband has only been dead for eight months. She has two kids, one of which is a pregnant teenager who's rebelling against Iris. Robert De Niro plays Stanley Cox, a troubled man who can't take care of his own dying father because he can't read or write. Stanley and Iris work in the same factory and when they finally meet, a friendship begins.
When Iris learns about Stanley's problem she decides to teach him how to read and write. Stanley, meanwhile, tries to teach her how to let go of her past and to love again. The close friendship between Stanley and Iris slowly blossoms into a romantic relationship that will change their lives forever. Will Iris be able to let go of her past, and will Stanley learn to read and write while romancing Iris? Watch this gem and find out!
This is a very sweet, sadly overlooked gem of a movie. Robert DeNiro, in a sharp departure from his typical tough-guy role, plays the shy Stanley, who doesn't know how to read. He meets Iris, played by Jane Fonda (Hanoi Jane is not my favorite, but she is superb here) who teaches him reading as their friendship and love blossom.
It is refreshing to see a film about people instead of explosions and elves and monsters.I wonder why DeNiro didn't get an Oscar nod for this one.
THIS IS NOT A DVD!!! THIS IS A 12" LASERDISC AND WILL NOT PLAY IN A DVD PLAYER
